The Spiritual Mountain Top
It’s a Saturday morning.
I seem to slip away from my morning routine on Saturdays. Ya feel me? Normally, I start with the Word, drink warm water or tea, and then go about the day. But on Saturdays, I sleep in, I wake up to social media and have less priority. Not this Saturday though. It was different. I woke up with a passion in my heart to read, found my bible, and it opened to Psalm 91. I memorized Psalm 91 in college only to have forgotten it now, and as I read the address, my heart welled up with gladness like I was re-acquainted with an old friend.
When I started reading the passage, it was as though God had breathed new life into it for me. A new understanding that was not there before met me with it’s warm light. And no matter if I memorized each word prior to this reunion, the sweet comfort came flooding back ten fold. They moved me.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’”
In college I was enamored by the thought of David’s heart toward God. How he often talked about no place to hide in the wilderness. No cave could save him from the arrows of the enemy, but God alone could. Thinking about his situation I thought, a cave could do it for me. LOL. I would physically be shielded from the enemy there. But David wasn’t just talking physically, he was talking deeper- spiritually. He didn’t grasp for fleeting comfort in the world first, he grasped for the eternal Life source. He was a seeker of the MOST HIGH, and David knew all about what this psalm is saying.
There is no place to hide like the shadow of the Almighty. Why? Because He is the MOST HIGH. No enemy can reach him!
Oh my goodness! How have I not imagined this before. I have learned about “mountain top experiences” all my life, but have never fully grasped my spirit actually BEING with the Lord in this place. And no one can reach me for He is the MOST HIGH. “No evil shall befall you” He says, because He is the MOST HIGH! “Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling”, because He is the MOST HIGH. “You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra” because He is the MOST HIGH.
God even tells us that He will be with us in times of trouble. I have found it extremely comforting knowing that my enemy is limited to the places he can go. Hallelujah! He no longer reaches the heavens. God is not there for him in time of need, and no matter what the sinner’s reward is here on earth, God’s eternal plan for me is greater. Because He is the MOST HIGH.
Jesus put his disciples on the mountain top because that is as physically high as they can go- here on earth. But our spirit is not limited to such. Our spirits won’t even experience death. Our spirits no longer go through the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus did that for us! Our righteous clothing is the blood of Jesus with whom the Wrath of God passes over. There is nothing we need worry but about obedience in our today, because our future is not an end, it’s a promise to a beginning.
Jesus was tempted on the mountain top. Think about that for a second. There is no high place I can go here on earth that is not laced with sin and Satan. But there is a place that Satan cannot reach. That is the shadow of the Almighty. I love the stark contrast of the most high places in the world where there is such a sense of freedom and conquest. But also so much pride as we often take for ourselves. But when God places us next to Him in the Highest Realm, we are not reigning over all, we are comforted in the shadow of Him with the stark awareness that we wouldn't be there without Him.
“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.”
Then I ask the question- why is that? Why would I only but look at the reward of the wicked? How could it not effect me personally the way it effects them?
Verse 9 continues “Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place.” Obedience in Him, that is why. Daily, I have to make the Most High my dwelling place. And no matter where I am physically, spiritually I see how much the odds are stacked against my enemies. Therefore I needn’t do a thing, except obey the One who sends His angels to guard all my ways. All my ways it says. That alone is enough to make me cry tears of undeserving joy.
And then God says. “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.”
I wish I could say all my days started with such passion, with my spirit in tune to the mysteries of God. But no matter how I feel in the morning, I will continue to seek the Lord and all of His goodness. I will be memorizing this passage again, but with a kindled fire and a humble spirit.
Thank you Lord!
Random fact: I don’t know about you but I cannot watch scary movies. I am too sensitive and get way too emotionally involved after the movie is over. I can watch a movie three months before and all of the sudden feel an attack of emotion at night and not be able to sleep. Anyone like this? Ironically enough, I heard the Lord call me back to Psalm 91 like I hadn’t extracted all the truth from it and I read, “You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day…” Whoa. It did not say the terror of night would disappear, nor the arrows in the day. It only said that I will not fear. But WOW! Those were powerful words to me! I am ready to continue my walk and trust in the Lord. Because obedience in Him sets me in the Most High places where not even fear can reach.
